I'm a celebrity vocal coach and artist development expert. And I help artist find their voice, craft their music, and create successful music careers. I've worked with Donald Fagen from Steely Dan, Courtney Love from Hole, I've worked with the band Journey. I'm going to teach you how to be a better singer and performer Hey, guys, I'm going to give you an exercise right now to master your breath in just ten minutes a day. Singing really has so much to do with the power of the breath. It's about controlling the breath. It's not about pushing the air out; it's about letting the air ring inside the mouth, and inside the resonating cavities. So getting control of the breath makes a huge difference. How you're going to do that, I'm going to teach you this breathing exercise, and you can do it in the morning for five minutes, and in the evening for five minutes before you go to bed. So this exercise has to do with slowing the breath down in order to get control of it. I want you to sit in a comfortable chair. You can also lie down and do this exercise. If you're lying down, put your knees up and your feet flat on the floor. If you are sitting, just sit comfortably, put one hand on your belly and you can also put one hand on your ribcage. I'm going to have you blow the air out, and then you are going to inhale for ten counts. You're going to inhale slowly like this: One-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten. And as you do that, if you notice, the middle of my body.my stomach and my ribcage are slowly expanding, slowly expanding. So you don't want to fill too quickly. You want to slowly expand like you're blowing up a balloon inside your body. And then you're going to exhale with a hiss Ssssss -- for 15 counts. So your goal is to be able to do do ten of these back-to-back comfortably. And when you can do that, you're on your way to mastering your breath. So let's give it a try. So, hand on your ribcage, hand on your belly; you can be sitting or lying on the floor, blowing the air out gently. Inhaling slowly: one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten, and exhaling: Ssssssssssssssss six-seven-eight-nine-ten. Keep going 11-12-13-14-15 and relax. Okay, let's try that again, and what I want you to do this time, is when you wrap that breath around and you come to that next inhale, I don't want you to gasp the air in. Because some of you will really feel like you're out of breath at 15 counts, but the goal of this exercise is to smooth it all out. So if you are pushing that air out too quickly on that exhale, you're going to feel like you want to gasp the air in, but that's not how to work the exercise. How to work the exercise is to actually don't push out so much air. Be comfortably exhaled so that you can inhale more easily. So when you come around to that inhale, I want you to take that inhale in very slow. That's how you start to control the breath. So the way to do this exercise is to do it ten repetitions in a row. And I recommend doing it in the morning, when you first wake up. It energizes your body and gets you kind of focused. And at the same time, your are mastering your breath and controlling your breath. And I also recommend it at the end of the day, before you go to bed, a nice way to drift off to sleep.

If you want to hold your breath for longer while swimming, there is no other way but to practice it in the pool while you’re swimming. Before we begin, i want to warn you about the dangers of this practice. They recommend the following tips to prevent SWB. http://www.shallowwaterblackoutprevention.org/how-it-happens/ Never hyperventilate. Never ignore the urge to breathe Never swim alone. Never play breath-holding games This is a fun exercise. We did 4 X 50s, the first one we did with 4 breathes total in the 50. The next one 3, then 2 and the last one with 1. Depending on your ability, you can do this 4,3,2,1 or with more breathes like say 7,6,5,4. The key here is to time your breaths strategically. This is a good tactic for doing a 50 in competition too. If you can do this slowly, it is also good to take only one breath during competition to not waste time breathing at full speed. The next exercise is 4 x 25s. I took two breathes for each 25. The interesting part though is to control your breathing during the rest. I rested for only 3 breaths. After the third breath I went on to do the next 25 with only two breathes. If you are not there yet. You can try a variation of this with more breaths. Something like 4 breaths for each 25 and 5 or 6 breaths while resting. These exercises will train you to feel more comfortable with the urge to breathe. While this is good for training it can also be dangerous for your health. Shallow water blackout is most common among physically fit swimmers, spear fishermen and free divers. Here are 4 simple breathing exercises that can truly energise you. . This is one of the special ways that you can actually get more energy by doing less than you normally do. Natural breathing is the usually the best breath for most people to practice during most exercise. In that way you can concentrate on doing your exercise without having to worry about breathing. If, however, you are doing something very simple and relaxing such as lying down or sitting, then you can take the time to do specific breathing exercises. Essentially, there are two types of breathing exercises. One type of breathing exercise, which is commonly taught in many physical training activities including many modern yoga classes, can benefit your physical body by improving the strength and flexibility of your muscles of breathing. Another type of breathing exercise that I wish to share with you here is breathing for increasing energy. This type of breathing is designed to increase the amount of oxygen entering your cells. In these four breathing exercises the trick is to breathe as little as you comfortably can in order to build up carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide has the important role in your body of being able to signal the red blood cells to give the oxgen they carry to your body cells. If there is not enough carbon dioxide in your body then red blood cells tend to retain their oxygen and not release it into your cells. This is called the Bohr-effect. When you get oxygen into your cells you have the possibility of making 18 times as much energy for every glucose molecule of ‘fuel’ you ‘burn’. The four simplest breathing exercises (apart from relaxed natural breathing) are as follows: *** 1. Inhalation emphasis breathing: make a really long slow inhale and then a short natural breath out. *** 2. Inhalation retention emphasis breathing: Make a gentle full breath in, and then hold your breath in as long as you comfortably can, and then a short natural breath out. *** 3. Exhalation emphasis breathing: Make a gentle full breath in, and then breathe out as slowly as possible for as long as it is comfortably possible. *** 4. Exhalation retention emphasis breathing: Make a gentle full breath in over 3-5 seconds, then a short full breath out about the same length, and then hold your breath out as long as you comfortably can. This practice is designed to give you the energetic benefits of breathing exercises by building up carbon dioxide. Increasing carbon dioxide in your body with these exercises will: *** Bring more blood to your brain and heart (vasodilation) *** Allow more oxygen to enter your body via your lungs (bronchodilation) *** Increase oxygen uptake into your cells, which can increase your energy levels to 18 times as much *** Calm your nervous system and reduce stress Increase digestion of food by stimulating hydrochloric acid levels *** Reduce your appetite for heavy, processed and acidic food. These exercises are a simple effective way to increase your health and longevity, that we have successfully taught to thousands of people around the world over the last 30 years. You can find the rest of this course at http://simonborgolivier.com/breath-training-for-health-and-longevity/

http://www.facebook.com/theorthobox Welcome back to YOU Can Beatbox. Today we're going to look at breath control and beatboxing, especially at making sure that you have the right balance of inward and outward sounds. And before we get started, please smash the like button on this video please and thank you. I remember when I had been beatboxing for just under a year and I found out about the inward K snare. Discovering that people were using sounds to bring in air made so much sense but I had never intentionally done it, so it was a complete paradigm shift. And there are plenty of sounds that are the inward variant of an outward sound. Normal K Snare pushing air out? Try the inward K snare to breath air in. Lip oscillations blow air out? Try a lip roll to bring air in. Once you open this door to inward sounds, you can begin taming the dragon that is breath control. To define breath control, I mean making sure that you always have the proper amount of air while beatboxing, which is often a delicate balance between making sounds and remembering that you're a human being. To be at the cutting edge of beatboxing technique, many people try to push this boundary of breath control. The air control issue can go both ways, meaning that there are some times when you have to little air, which I'm sure everyone has experienced, but there are also times where you take in too much air, like with certain inward drag techniques or snares. Both cases can be a problem because at the very least you need to make sure that you are getting enough air to continue the your flow and beat and not get lightheaded. So lets look at some tips for how to maintain breath control: Whether your issue is too much air or too little air, a great way improve your stamina is to slow down the beat you're trying to a point just beyond your comfort zone. So instead of [fast inward drag] try slower [demo]. This will allow your conscious mind to take over and you can pinpoint what part of the beat or which sound is giving you breath control issues. Is it the inward drag that's making your lightheaded? Or are you exhaling too much with your snares? Since everyone's sounds vary, slowing yourself down will allow you to pay attention to potential problem areas and can help you tighten up your breath control, your routines and sound precision. This will increase your skills and flow. To fix when you have too little air, see if you can sneak a quick and silent breath into a beat. Can't do it? See if there's an inward sound that can handle that for you to allow you to breath during a beat. If neither of those works, try slowing things down to work up your stamina. The time you invest in improving in this area will pay off as you add new sounds to your repertoire. To fix when you have too much air, see if you can switch up the beat to have the same style but something that's more biologically possible for you. If that doesn't work, see if you can be economical and use less air to make the same sound. If neither works, again try to slow things down to see if you can improve your individuals sounds. And a quick note that I hope is self evident, stop beatboxing if you feel lightheaded or are having a tough time breathing. Safety first, beatboxing second, though its close.
